All of us hope and long for a healthy, well-built, straight set of teeth that are durable and long-lasting. Just the thought of having to cope with missing teeth may instill a lack of confidence thereby preventing us from carrying out normal functions of the teeth and mouth. With the onset of dental implants, more and more patients are finding it easy to cope with the dilemma of missing teeth. Over the past few years, dental implants have been helping several patients restore their smile and help them perform normal functions of the teeth and mouth.
What are dental implants?
Implants are strong artificial tooth roots made out of titanium material. Its design and engineering make it the perfect substitute for missing natural roots that may have been lost or damaged. Placing and getting dental implants is a surgical process and would require at least two office visits to replace your lost teeth. Implants may be used to replace single or multiple cases of missing teeth. After inserting the implant, it would be covered by a restoration that is most commonly in the form of a dental crown. Implants can support crowns, bridges, or even dentures.
What is the process involved in getting dental implants?
With the advances in dentistry and the rise in dental technology, oral surgeons are now digitally planning and committing treatment. The dentist would be able to scan the patient and come up with a well-planned treatment much ahead of time. Surgeries being guided with lasers are now assuring patients with less post-op discomfort and better results.
The process involved in getting implants would require two processes. The first process is where the oral surgeon surgically places the implant and the second process is the placement of the restoration.
Prior to beginning the procedure, your dentist would take necessary X-rays to understand how many restorations are required.
After placement of the implant(s), a certain healing period would be advised in order to allow the implants to join with the jawbone (osseointegration) and only post the healing period would the dentist place or attach the abutment to the implant. This would help hold the restoration. A suitable restoration that matches the color and contour of your teeth would be mold and created. This would then be attached to the abutment with the help of dental adhesives.
Cost and Convenience
Implants are known to be a cost-effective and convenient method of replacing missing teeth without much hassle. Implants when done right is a life-changing process, a long-term solution to missing teeth, and is a confidence booster. Patients would be able to eat, talk, laugh, and speak with confidence making lives healthy and happy.
